Vilnius prepares to become European Capital of CultureVilnius associates its development with the title of European Capital of Culture in 2009. Officials expect that the number of business tourists will increase with the construction of a new conference centre and additional infrastructure. Arunas Griskenas, CEO of flyLAL, is certain that the status of Capital of Culture will attract business tourists to Vilnius. He forecasts the growth of passenger flows. The owners of hotels and restaurants hope that the planned conference centre could take up to 2,000-2,500 participants, which would propel Vilnius into a new regional business centre. The complex would allow Vilnius to compete with Riga and Tallinn, which currently attract more business travellers; 1.2 million tourists visited Vilnius in 2005. The number of tourists is expected to grow to 2 million by 2009. Evalda Siskauskiene, president of the Lithuanian Hotel and Restaurant Association, is sure that the construction of new hotels in the capital will grow. Lithuania Lithuania, the "Amber Land", is a country you may have
heard about without actually knowing much about its people and
its customs. According to Lonely Planet: : "Lithuania is the most vibrant Baltic
state, shown not only by its antiestablishment statues but more
deeply by its daring and emotional drive for independence in
1990-91". Conde Nast Traveler (US) has put Vilnius and Lithuania
on the list of Hot Destinations and Sunday Express (UK) has
described the capital of Lithuania as the most beautiful
undiscovered city in Europe. |
